Who doesn’t have a mirror in their home?
I just love the play of light from mirrors and why shouldn’t we take advantage of this.
What piece of furniture or decor can do as much as a mirror? Placement and the correct installation are key, so let’s get it just right.
Before You Start
Not all mirrors are meant to be hung. Some are designed to be leaner’s, (noted on the mirror’s back), if you do hang it and it breaks, a manufacturer’s liability won’t cover it.
When it comes to safely hanging a mirror, a single hook or nail to string the wire from is out of the question.
Consider a tilt. Hanging a mirror high on the wall at a downward tilt will reflect more of the room.
How to Hang a Mirror
Above a mantel or console/buffet: decide if you’re a symmetrical person or not.
Offset mirrors look fabulous if balanced with a lamp or tall decor pieces on the opposite end of the console. Or simply keep it symmetrical by centring it. Keeping it like artwork, at eye level.
In the bathroom: while most bathroom sinks will come with a frameless mirror mounted onto the wall, consider bringing in a professional to add a frame around the mirror for added visual interest.
Over difficult surfaces: use special drill bits made exclusively for tile, glass or concrete.
Tricks and Tips
Think twice before installing a mirror on anything that has a lot of movement.
If placing a mirror above the bed, consider getting a pro to install it to get the job done safely.Tall rooms benefit from mirrors, while long rooms do better with horizontal mirrors.
Be bold and install a mirror over another mirror. Always get professional advice for this installation.
Make your mirrors work for you and enjoy the result.
