Elements of Classic Coastal Style

What is classic coastal style?

A sophisticated look with a distinct palette of whites, neutrals, blues, charcoal and black, crisp linens, bold stripes and painted beadboard.  Create a clean and sophisticated feel with accessories of beautiful shells, coral, maritime instruments and coastal art.

Light neutrals and stripes

Painting the whole room in a shade of white is great for showing off soft furnishings and accessories.  Wide spaced stripes on upholstered furnishings creates an instant coastal look.

Paint the back of bookcases or shelving in a neutral shade to create a contrast backdrop for displaying your accessories and coastal art. Lime washed for weathered side and coffee tables complete the look.

Window coverings

White shutters for the classic look or alternatively timber venetians and roman blinds always look smart. Soft sheers on white poles that catch the breeze gives the space movement and life.    Deep indigo is a perfect accent for any style of window treatment.

Furniture styles

Recycle a piece of furniture by painting it to make a bold statement.  An ottoman provides extra seating for guests and with a display of shells or coral, coastal style books and vase of flowers on a tray creates the perfect vignette.

Don’t forget to warm the space with some timber tones, whether its end tables a cane occasional chair or a timber sofa console.  Traditional and elegant furniture styles work best for the classic coastal look.

Flooring

Natural flooring is the way to go, timber – particularly dark timber, sisal or seagrass with a large floor rug to define the space. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns in the overall look. Just remember to keep an element in them that’s identical.

Artwork

Gather nautical or coastal themed images to hang on your walls.  Perhaps classic yacht photos in B&W with a mix of maritime accessories.

Materials

Wainscoting is a stylish way to create the classic coastal style.  Divide your wall into thirds and panel the lower third only in the wainscoting or panelling. The upper two thirds can either be finished with an accent colour of paint or wallpapered.

A classic coastal style is relaxing and inviting, consider the possibilities.
